The Fender Brent Mason Telecaster recreates the prized Tele the Grammy Award-winning player discovered in a Nashville guitar shop in the early ’80s. Already stripped of its original finish and re-sprayed in gray auto primer, the ’67/’68 guitar wasn't pretty, but Mason wasn't after looks. As a young, working musician on a quest for varied sounds, he found himself unable to afford multiple guitars and was forced to get creative. Brent outfitted it with new pickups, controls and a Glaser Bender system—transforming it into a versatile all-in-one session guitar.
This Telecaster features an ash body, but thankfully finished in gray urethane instead of primer. The neck and fretboard are maple, with a bone nut and vintage tall frets. The electronics are where things start to get interesting.
Brent spec'd this Tele with 3 Seymour Duncan pickups. In the bridge, a Vintage Stack Tele provides classic Telecaster tones without hum. The Hot Stack Strat in the middle uses ceramic magnets and a blade to deliver more midrange and a stronger attack. The neck is a Vintage Mini humbucker, providing the sparkle of a single coil with the tight low end of a full-sized humbucker. You can access the full array of sounds via a 3-position switch, 2 volume controls (master, middle) and a master tone knob.
Like the original, this guitar also has a Glaser bender system—a premium touch with the smoothest feel ever, perfect for pedal steel-style bends. Other hardware includes a Deluxe Tele bridge with 6 block saddles and locking Sperzel tuners. All hardware is chrome/gold plated.
Made in the U.S., the Fender Brent Mason Telecaster comes with a hardshell case. This model is a tribute to the innovation that is Brent’s Telecaster, the weapon-of-choice and workhorse for a living country music legend.
